We touched bases with the “Princess of Brooklyn“, Pretty Lyon, for an in-depth look into her career, music & mindset.
How did you get signed to Ikonic? I’ve known (CEO) Eleven from the beginning of my career, years ago. He’s watched me grow and always believed me. He started his label and decided to give me a chance.
How is it being on a all female label? It’s fun; a learning experience and a little difficulty at times. [Laughs] Women are powerful beings and I enjoy learning and sharing a goal with like-minded women. They are like my sisters.
Describe your “Come-Up” so far: I honestly don’t feel like I’ve “come-up” yet. I’ve accomplished a lot of dope things but I’m just getting started. I have so much work to do!
Name your biggest influence: I have a few for many reasons, but I’ll name a few. Missy Elliott, Jay Z, Nicki Minaj and Slick Rick. Each are authentic, creative & icons. I pray to be able to leave a mark like they have.
If you can, put your style in words: [An] Edgy, fun, breath of fresh air. My style and my music is a whole vibe.
Describe your songmaking process: It really depends. Sometime I have beats that guide my direction. So I’ll hear a beat, it makes me feel a certain way and I begin to play off that. Or I already have an idea for a song, and then I go look for a beat to help create a melody or cadence so I can begin writing. Music is all about a mood, making people feel something.
What’s your biggest challenge as an artist? Being different and not fully conforming. So many people think I’m talented, but of course when you’re different it takes a big co-sign for other people to outwardly agree. I’m the underdog. It isn’t a challenge in a bad way though. It’s more like I’ll prove everyone wrong.
What legacy will you leave? I want to be remembered as one of the greats; an icon. An artist who also gave back, never settled and created a lane for a new wave of women. Regal, classy, bossy, smart and dope as f*ck! I want my music and my work to be timeless.
